Two Las Vegas fighters making their debut at LFC 25: Showdown At Sam's Town kick-start our list as the fifth most controversial finish in LFC history. Tasia 'Thrash' Lockran (1-0), ceding seven inches in height, takes on Agatha 'Cannibal' Carter (1-2). The controversy in this match started early, when Tasia, making up for the difference in height, used the top of the cage for leverage against an opponent she actually outweighed by a few pounds. The referee, oblivious to the foul, did not even warn Lockran. Carter, never really able to sink her teeth into the match – or into her opponent – finds herself in trouble at the midway-point of the round. When a fighter is no longer able to protect themselves, the referee is supposed to do so for them. Carter, caught in a vicious choke-hold, tried to tap, signaling to the referee she was through and in need of a stoppage, but her taps went unnoticed, and she was left unconscious.
LFC 23: Guilty Pleasures is the setting for our fourth most controversial finish. To begin with, the Mona 'Jugular' Jones (1-0) that coach Joel Kane showed up with is not the Mona Jones he originally drafted. Raya 'Sugar Ray' Ryans (7-3), ever the good sport, goes ahead, in spite of a 45 pound weight disadvantage! The smaller woman battled valiantly against a very powerful opponent. At one point, Mona lifted up Ryans and introduced her to the cage fencing, not once, but three times. Still not disillusioned by her circumstances, Ryans, with time winding down in the match, gets her foe in a tight choke-hold. There is little doubt that Jones tapped out, but unfortunately, the referee had his mind on other things, and denied Ryans her well-earned victory in the face of the seemingly insurmountable. Jones would go on to win by judges decision.
The third entry on this list takes us to Bratislava, Slovakia, for LFC 24: Eurobash. Facing off are Piper 'Code Red' Rose (1-1) from Portland, Oregon and LFC Prez Maxine 'The Boss' Frost (1-2), fighting out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Frost, who is no stranger to controversy having reneged on a bet to step down as Prez after a loss to Serina 'Honey Punch' Kyle (2-2) at LFC 23: Guilty Pleasures, is a fill-in fighter for Danielle 'Cow Belle' St. Pierre (2-2). That by itself might be enough to put ‘The Boss’ in a sour mood. Rose, trying her best to take advantage of Maxine’s unpreparedness, finds herself surprised by her opponents aggressiveness and willingness to finish the fight. Maxine locks in an armbar that comes up short at the end of the first. Rose then makes the mistake of playfully hitting Maxine on her behind after the round is over. Possibly due to frustration from not getting a submission, Maxine’s emotions get the better of her and she gives us her best impression of Shelly 'Aphrodite' DaSilva (9-7) (who appears later on this list). Frost charges Rose and hits her on the back of the neck, knocking her down. The bout ends in a disqualification; Maxine, still enraged, charges Rose again after the official decision
It is debatable whether this match belongs on the top five best finishes in the LFC. However, because of the disqualification, it is number two on this list. This exciting entry comes out of LFC 20: A Midsummer Night's Dream. Riley 'Nuclear' Norris (2-4), fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, takes on Jenny 'Bloody' Valentine (3-3) representing the Steel City, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who brings a powerful punch and a fiery temper into the cage for her debut. Norris entered with a losing record due to having faced some of the best the LFC has to offer. The first round showed two wrestlers willing to transition and trade momentum, but Valentine’s superior strength was obvious. After thwarting a submission attempt, Norris, seemingly angered, offered two hard kicks to Valentine’s legs, opening herself up in the process. Valentine, acting on instinct, let go a stiff – but illegal – right-hand to her opponent’s jaw. Norris collapsed immediately. As Valentine celebrated what she thought was a knock out victory the referee correctly disqualified from her giving the still unconscious Norris the victory.
Two residents of Los Angeles, California, square off at LFC 22: Costume Brawl, for our number one most controversial finish. Audrey 'The Mongoose' Monique (2-1) enters the cage against Shelly 'Aphrodite' DaSilva (9-7), who is no stranger to controversy. Some have wondered if the outcome might have been different if Monique had simply touched gloves after the stare down with DaSilva (she left The Aphrodite hanging). Or if ‘The Mongoose’ had not used an illegal kick early in the opening round. Who is to say at this point? It’s hard to defend the actions of DaSilva but blaming her for biting Monique’s eyeball may be like blaming a volcano for erupting. Forces of nature do not have a choice and will do what comes naturally. Let’s just hope DaSilva can control her urges/passions in the future or she may find herself suspended permanently next time.
